Spaces

Show me the spaces
Between the words that I’m hearing.
Show me the spaces,
I can’t hear them.
I hear consonants and vowels
Strung like pearls, clustered like crystals.
I hear breaths, pauses to think,
The rise and fall of the voice, but
Spaces? Show me.
My brain strafes black hole bullets,
Conquering the cosmos by carving
Oceans and canyons in crisp bitesize bits
Because I can’t make any sense of an undivided world.
My ears hear sound.
My brain scratches for syllable.
Slicing up voices with scissors:
There’s subject and object, and a relation between,
With power implications, subordinations, possessions, priorities.
All experiences bow to how and where and when
I inject little nothings where they do not exist,
Coping with improvisational contexts.
Show me the spaces
Between the selves that are speaking.
Show me the spaces,
I can’t hear them, but I feel them.
